Daniel Bélanger - A 25-year journey from Los Alamos to the east along the Saint-Laurent and Loire rivers, to investigate electrode materials and aqueous electrolytes for electrochemical capacitors

Electrochemical capacitors have attracted a lot of interest in the past 25 years. The research performed has included various aspects that are not only limited to the development of new materials but that also involved fundamental studies to get a better understanding of charge storage processes in, most often, porous materials.

Over that period, our laboratory has developed new materials based on conducting polymers, metal oxides and modified carbons. These materials were developed for applications in hybrid devices in aqueous based electrolytes. More recently, our attention has focused on superconcentrated aqueous electrolytes and new methods for the fabrication of practical devices.

Daniel Bélanger is currently Professor in the Département de Chimie de l’Université du Québec à Montréal. Daniel Bélanger obtained a BSc in Chemistry at the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières, a MSc in Chemistry at Université Laval, and a PhD in photoelectrochemistry in 1985 under the supervision of Jean-Pol Dodelet at the Institut National de la Recherche Scientifique (INRS). He then worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Massachussets Institute of Technology (MIT) with Mark S. Wrighton, before joining the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) in 1987 as an assistant professor. His current research interests in the area of electrochemistry include chemical and electrochemical modification of surfaces, electrode materials for electrochemical energy storage systems and electrolytes.

ISEECap 2019

ISEECap 2019 (International Symposium on Enhanced Electrochemical Capacitors) gathered the most renowned international experts together with students and non-specialist engineers and researchers who share interest in electrochemical capacitors. A broad range of topics was covered, including electrochemical double layer capacitors, pseudocapacitive materials and related mechanisms, electrolytes and interfaces, modelling of phenomena and systems, microsupercapacitors and related components, systems integration and applications, fast charging battery electrodes for asymmetric and hybrid devices, characterization techniques, in-situ and operando methods. This edition celebrated the ten-year anniversary of the symposium series in the beautiful city of Nantes from 6th May to 10th May 2019.
